Electric polarizability of the neutron in dynamical quark ensembles
نویسنده
چکیده
The background field method for measuring the electric polarizability of the neutron is adapted to the dynamical quark case, resulting in the calculation of (certain space-time integrals over) threeand four-point functions. Particular care is taken to disentangle polarizability effects from the effects of subjecting the neutron to a constant background gauge field; such a field is not a pure gauge on a finite lattice and engenders a mass shift of its own. At a pion mass of mπ = 759MeV, a small, slightly negative electric polarizability is found for the neutron.

The background field method on the lattice
The background field method has been used successfully to determine hadron electromagnetic polarizabilities. Recently questions have been raised regarding the proper way to deal with the electric field on the lattice. In this paper, we show how the presence of a background electric field affects the quark hopping matrix. We use this formulation to carry out simulations on quenched configuration...
متن کاملElectric Polarizability of Mesons in Semirelativistic Quark Models
The electric polarizability of mesons, in particular, that of the charged pion, is studied in the framework of a semirelativistic description of hadrons as bound states of valence quarks in terms of a Hamiltonian composed of the relativistic kinetic energy as well as a phenomenological potential describing the strong interactions between the quarks. The quark-core contribution to the electric p...
متن کاملEffects of Dynamical Quarks in UKQCD Simulations
Recent results from the UKQCD Collaboration’s dynamical simulations are presented. The main feature of these ensembles is that they have a fixed lattice spacing and volume, but varying sea quark mass from infinite (corresponding to the quenched simulation) down to roughly that of the strange quark mass. The main aim of this work is to uncover dynamical quark effects from these “matched” ensembl...
متن کاملResponse of nucleons to external probes in hedgehog models. I. Electromagnetic polarizabilities.
Electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are analyzed in a hedgehog model with quark and meson degrees of freedom. Semiclassical methods are used (linear response theory, quantization via cranking). It is found that in hedgehog models (Skyrmion, chiral quark models, Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model), the average electric polarizability of the nucleon, αN , is of the order Nc, and the splitting o...
متن کاملDyons as a source of CP and time invariance violation: electric dipole moments and K-meson decays
We consider a mechanism by which dyons (electrically charged magnetic monopoles) can produce both a T and P -odd (i.e. time reversal invariance and parity violating) mixed polarizability β [defined by ∆E = −βE ·B, where ∆E is the energy change when electric (E) and magnetic (B) fields are applied to a system] and a T and P -odd interaction between two particles: ψ1γ5ψ1ψ2ψ2, where the ψi are ele...
